JYP Apologizes For Tzuyu Controversy

Tzuyugate may be coming to a close, hopefully. Most C-netizens seem to want to drag this thing out. However, JYPE released another statement earlier today apologizing for the whole China-Taiwan controversy. The letter states that Tzuyu respects "One China" and she never clearly stated she was pro-Taiwanese independence in the first place. I think this move of apologizing was better than saying nothing at all. On the other hand, I thought apologizing would make them look like they were to blame, which they were not. Tzuyugate Is REALLY Getting Out of Hand

So, I was looking through the internet and did not realize this whole issue with Tzuyu was as bad as it is now. In all honesty, it is actually getting very childish. The letter I posted in my previous post of JYP Entertainment was actually a response to the following:

Twice was invited by An Hui TV to the Spring Festival Gala, an agent acting on An Hui's behalf has requested JYP fullfill one of the following due to the incident with Tzuyu:

1. Send another group instead of Twice

2. Send Twice (minus Tzuyu)

3. Pay back the money that was paid out to JYPE

JYP has declined all 3, and the agent has posted correspondence between himself and the JYP representative on Weibo.

JYP's summarized response is below:

 Translation of the JYP response:

After a day of meeting we have concluded that we cannot respond to the issue as we need to protect our artists. If we refund the money to An Hui TV to the outside this will affect the position of our company, we hope that you can understand our position. It's not because we do not want to refund the money, it's just that if we refund the 10000 dollars (didn't state what currency) it will look as though we are accepting blame for this issue. Next time there is an event, we will be happy to provide you the lowest possible price for any of our other artists: GOT 7, 2PM, Wonder Girls.

The spokesperson for An Hui TV then went onto say if this is the attitude JYP holds towards Tzuyu's issue, then there is no need for them to work with JYP in the future. He also added that if this is JYP's attitude, then it will be difficult for any TV station in China to work with them in future.

This has caused an uproar among the C-netizens and many are voicing that JYPE's response implies that they are not willing to speak up on the China Taiwan issue. And not giving a response shows they accept that Taiwanese independence.

Another netizen has posted a section from the China-South Korea Trade Agreement which is has been translated below:

South Korean government acknowledges that the People's Republic of China and Republic of China (proper name for Taiwan) as one government body. In addition, respects that there is only one China, and taiwan is a part of China.

C-netizens are arguing that since the Korean government acknowledges this, there is no excuse for JYP to not be able to make a stand on this issue. 

There is also a group of C-netizens who are voicing that it is unfair for all JYP artists to be dragged down by Tzuyu, and is demanding JYP to make a proper response with regards to this issue.

When I first read about Tzuyu, I thought "this will die down eventually." However, from what I have read and gathered, most of the Chinese media or public are making a mountain out of a molehill with this issue. It's as if they are LOOKING for a fight. Poor Tzuyu, I knew she did not see all this coming. What do you think about Tzuyugate?

Update On Tzuyu Controversy

So, JYP sent out an apology to those who were offended by Tzuyu's supposed stance for Taiwan independence. In the letter below, he states that his company has always fostered a good relationship between Korea and China. He also mentioned a valid point that some ruthless C-netizens choose to ignore: Tzuyu is 16! She is not going to reserve any political views at her age. JYP finally mentioned that any scheduled activities of his company is to be canceled in China until the issue is resolved. With all this mayhem over Chinese nationalism and Tzuyu, I'm not sure if JYP can come back from this. Looking through the Internet over this issue, it seems to me that C-netizens maybe be unforgiving about this. Who knows? The apology letter is translated in English down below.

BoA Releases New Track

I was ready to not write a post today since today is a slow news day (to me, a slow news day is when there's nothing that interests me in k-pop news) and I have a bit of a headache. However, the Queen of Korean Pop, BoA, came to my rescue! BoA recently released an English track, Make Me Complete, for the Japanese drama Inner Palace, on Fuji TV. Apparently, BoA's powerful singing is supposed reflect the feelings of the women of this drama. Inner Palace will premiere on January 22. This was a random release, but I'm not complaining ^^. I'm really happy I have a reason to post about her on my blog. I think the track sounds beautiful and ethereal, but, then again, that's the norm for a BoA track! Have a listen of the track below.

Terrible News For TWICE's Tzuyu

As you climb the "success" ladder, you will always come across some obstacles. One being HATERS.  This all started on a show called My Little Television. Tzuyu appeared on a recent episode with Momo, Sana, Mina, and GOT7's Jackson. After Jackson stated he was from Hong Kong-China, Tzuyu, holding a Taiwanese flag, said she was from Taiwan. Just Taiwan. This is a big no-no for the Chinese public. When one states that they are from Taiwan, they should say Taiwan-China. This shows they support the inclusion of Taiwan with China. Tzuyu, on the other hand, "demonstrated Taiwanese independence" in a polite manner.

Now, this would not have been much of an issue if, let's say, a manic 50-something year old man had not taken to his Weibo account to fire off on Tzuyu about this matter. However, unfortunately, this is the case. Huang An, an older,TAIWANESE singer in his 50's, took jabs at Tzuyu's image on his Weibo account. And he did not write one or two posts about Tzuyu's not-confirmed Taiwanese pride, but several. Really, dude? She's only a kid...you have way too much time on your hands.

...oh, the irony...

Because of Huang An, Tzuyu has become a trending topic on Weibo for three consecutive days. This is unheard of as new topics trend very fast on Weibo everyday. Tzuyu trending for so long has caught the attention of the Chinese government since their elections are nearing and are taking no prisoners for whoever hints at Taiwanese independence...but she didn't -_- .

Due to this misunderstanding, here's a list of Chinese bans TWICE is suffering from:

1. Twice recording for the Bei Jing Spring Festival Gala will be edited out.

2. Twice was invited to the An Hui Spring Festival Gala, that is now removed.

3. Twice CF deal with LG + Huawei has been terminated. (This is the most extreme since LG is a Korean company. What?!?)

4. Kuwo music (China's version of Spotify with over 1 million app downloads) has removed all JYP artist songs and music videos.

5. Kugou music (Same deal as Kuwo) has removed all of Twice songs and music videos.

6. Hunan TV (The channel that a lot of Kpop artists appear on) has voiced they will not be inviting supporters of Taiwan independence to their shows.

The combination of the Chinese media and C-netizens has made it so any JYP artists are outcasts in China. This is such an ugly issue over something that has not been proven. Hopefully, this issue will die down soon in China because I really like TWICE's "Like Ohh-Ahh" and want them to make more music like that. The Chinese media are really blowing this whole situation out of proportion. What do you think about this issue?

Kai To Debut As An Actor in New Webdrama

Kai is going to star in a new webdrama called "Choco Bank." He will be playing as Kim Eun-Haeng (Eun-Haeng means bank in Korean). Eun-Haeung was given his name by his father in hopes he will make huge amounts of money during his lifetime, just like a bank. Eun-Haeng is a university graduate seeking a career in finances. During his journey, "he will discover the ‘financial necessities to life’ through: the process of running funds, crowd fundings, pin-tech, etc." "Choco Bank" will be a 6-part webdrama with 10 minutes for each episode. Filming will start this month and the webdrama will premiere next month.
